very good information sk
I spent a lot of time on mine
last year and got it where it really blows
those piles up where the limbs and fish really
shine. I am running the 899 it is really a good small
unit once you get it set up right.
what helped most is like you said i had to bring the side
range way in i am running 45 feet to the side
i upgraded to the high def transducer. i run 455 most of the time
need to bring the range way down on 800kz
another thing that really helped is to level the transducer with the
boat on the water running 3-5 mph or what ever speed you scan at.
set sonar scroll speed to match engine speed.

That video is great. An hour just talking about how to manipulate all the options. That doesn't even get into how long it will take to dial it in for specific water bodies, or even specific water conditions on the same lake.

I lose almost an hour at the beginning of every trip playing with the settings to get a good image on the same tree in the East Fork (which may not be there anymore) before I even get to fishing...and I still constantly tinker with the thing the rest of the day. I did notice this year that I get much better returns and images when the water is cold. I couldn't get a good image off my sideview all summer, but I feel like I had it dialed in back in February and March. Curious to see how it goes on Sunday.
