I have been fishing with people that put their fish in the ice chest
but the ice chest looks like it has never been cleaned it has not
even been opened to dry out . still has fish slime from the last
trip and has mold in it from not being dried properly. How do
people not get sick from that.

I always clean my ice chest right after i clean the fish.

i use bleach water and soap to clean it the bleach will
kill all mold and germs to stop salmonella growth.
the soap and bleach will remove all fish slim and dirt.
rinse with clean water open the chest turn upside down
to dry properly before putting away.

Hope this keeps people from getting sick.

Sticko,

Domt mix the bleach and soap together. Depending on exact. soap it can reach with bleach and make nasty fume. Recommend soap first, rinse, follow with bleach.

I personally just hit it immediately with 3000 psi pressure washer. Never had issue.

I been putting mine in the live well with the water left over from bait and then left over ice from drink cooler. Bought an RTIC cooler little over year ago and just can't bring myself to put fish in there and hate carrying two ice chest cause takes up room. Surprisingly even on a long trip still will have ice in the live well, just wash and rinse it out super good when cleaning the boat. But I use stringers when fishing I know many just throw them straight into cooler though.

Sticko,

Correct.....ammonia and bleach mixed are really bad but even some soaps and bleach dont mix well together.

As to pressure washer it doesnt hurt the Yeti. Cleans it right up. I dont know if I have ever tried it on a “cheap” Igloo.

Sometimes I just go with the “leave dirty cooler next to back door until wife gets aggravated and cleans it”

I knew a guy that would not carry 2 ice chests and he kept his snacks and drinks in the same cooler as the fish. I had to part ways with that nasty dude. he was always wondering why he felt tired????? go figure?

I have never had any bad gas fumes from mixing dish soap with Bleach but i wash them outside
in the open wind. But just bleach puts out chlorine gas. Women have always mixed bleach with
soap doing laundry with that gas in the house.
Anyway it will kill any mold on anything . if you don't want to use the soap just fill the ice chest with
water and put a little bleach in it and let it set a bit then rinse it .

Sticko,

Ive got to admit this funny story...Im a ChemE so I should know better than to mix belach and ammonia. One particular night when I was single my girlfriend called and informed me she was on her way over. My apartment was a wreck....inluding the toilet bowl and I didnt have much time hahaha. Threw some Ajax in there and hit it with toilet brush but that didnt get it. Decided to go with redneck axiom of more of anything and everything is better and dumped some of all my cleaners in the bowl. When I went back in the bathroom to check on toilet it nearly knocked me out. It took several hours with the windows open and fans running to get all the fumes cleared out. It was a little hard to explain that one to the gf hahaha...

I still think i will keep the ice chest i put my fish in clean and my drinks go into another
clean ice chest. I only hope all the lazy people don't get sick that wont wash out their
fish box and put their drinks in the same box.
