use live bluegills for Bass. They love them. I hook them either in the lips, or in the back behind the dorsal fin. If back there make sure not to poke their lateral line or you will paralyze the fish. When the bass hits you cannot set the hook right away. You must let them run with it for a good 5 seconds. Seems like an eternity while it is happening. If you set too soon you will pull the fish out of their mouth.
I free line them when I use them. Use ones about 3" to 4" long for best results.
