The crappie should move up on the banks earlier on
the power plant lakes. Also as you were thinking the
rocks will hold the warmth longer . You can read a lot
about crappie moving up around the 55 degrees mark
but from what i have experienced around here is it
more like 64 degrees when the males will hit the shallows
to build their nests and drive the females on the nest to spawn.

I hardly ever go shallow for the spawn. I will stay out on the piles
just out from the spawning flats. They will always hold fish. usually
better fish and it is not so much work. It takes work to jig miles
of bank but much easier to just sit in one spot and jig a pile or two.

since the crappie do not all spawn at one time the spawn is spread
out over several months. A few female crappie will stage up just out
from the spawning flats in deeper water . Once the males get the nest ready
he will go out and drive a female on the beds to lay her eggs. She will leave
the nest and he will raise the young. She then will go back out on the staging
area to rest up before going to deeper water for the summer . Then another
wave of females come to stage up to go in to lay her eggs.
so i can stay out and be on fish all during the spawning months. The only
time i will go shallow is if the wind is beating me up to bad out in the depths
i will hit the spawning beds out of the wind.
