Well I only use spinning reels so I go with Shimanos if I wanna spend some money. Other than that I just get the shakespeare setups. I have had an ugly stick ultralight with the reel that came on it for round 4 years now. Caught many big fish and little fish on it. Abused the hell outta it as it cost me I think 30 bucks?
If your on a budget an ugly stick + reel combo cant be beat in my opinion. |

If you are wanting a baitcast bass pro has the pro qualifiers on sale this week for 69.99 from 99.99. These are awesome reels. I use one for my worm rod with 30lb braid on it and I use a 7:1 ratio to keep up with bass that make a mad swim for it. I also have one for my crank stick and am about to get another one for my wifes rod. Hope this helps _________________ Just remember you work to live not live to work. Enjoy this life |

I'm of the opinion you can't really go wrong with anything Shimano.
That's not to say other brands aren't good though. Hold as many as you can in your price range and choose what feels most comfortable. |

I ended up purchasing a quantum av77ocx bait caster( 7 bearing 7.0:1 gear) with median action 7' rod on sale for 60 for both.... instead of the usaully 140 combo at academy.... could have had the whole set for just 40 cause the lady only charged the fishing reel...i felt guilty and said something....but quickly regretted it when she gave me a funny look like I had done something wrong....thats ok ...my nephew bought a 150 paint ball gun and Large box of paintballs for 25 bucks total at the same place for the same reason...he however didnt feel guilty and hauled ass out of there.
and i love this reel very nice...pretty sure nothing compared to some of the high dollar reels out there but i love my quantum....i can throw much farther, less backlash, and lighter lures then my other shakespear baitcaster or shakespear spinning reel |

TSAEB.
You did the right thing and you can feel good about doing it because you knew the lady had made a mistake and charged you the wrong price.
you still got a very good deal on the rod and reel.
Thanks for doing the right thing. |

As far as the gear ratios go, you can kind of compare it to bicycle gears. The lower gears in a bike are for lower speeds, but can handle higher loads (like when you are just getting going and have no momentum). The higher gears let you go faster, but can't handle any load. So..., you can fish higher gear ratio reels faster, but they are a little more difficult to hall in bigger fish or branches. Lower gear ratios can bring in bigger fish easier, but fish a bit slower.
By the way, I have one of the H2O Mettle reels and it is very smooth and capable. I havn't caught many big fish with it, but for the money it is doing quite well. |
